Minister’s Musings – Where do I Find Meaning?

Sometimes, we reach a point in our lives where we feel stuck. We do not feel satisfied with what we are doing or how we are living. It may feel like there are obstacles one after the other. Those obstacles and feelings of dissatisfaction may be temporary and only appear occasionally. However, what happens if they are constant and consistent in our lives?

Parker Palmer suggests that when we are in this constant state of dissatisfaction and bumping into obstacles, maybe it is because we are not listening to our inner voice. You know, the Voice, still and small, deep inside us all…calling. In other words, our discontent and frustration may be the products of not listening to what our heart really wants to do.

I remember heading off to college, set on being a doctor. It was a dream I had for many years growing up. However, when it came to trying to realize the dream, my heart was not in it. I was struggling in classes and was becoming extremely frustrated. I really wanted just to run away from it all. It was when I stopped and asked myself why I wanted to be a doctor that I realized it was not my dream, but my grandfather’s dream. He wanted me to be a doctor.

Where is your life telling you to go? Are you listening?
