Minister’s Musings – Where do I Find Meaning?

Before you tell your life what you intend to do with it, listen for what it intends to do with you. Before you tell your life what truths and values you have decided to live up to, let your life tell you what truths you embody, what values you represent.”                                                                                                                                      – Parker Palmer, “Let Your Life Speak”

Sometimes we come to place in our lives and we feel stuck. We do not feel satisfied in what we are doing or how we are living. It may feel like there are obstacles one after the other. Those obstacles and feelings of dissatisfaction could be temporary and only pop up every once in awhile. However, what happens if they are constant and consistent in our lives.

Parker Palmer suggests when we are in this constant state of dissatisfaction and bumping into obstacles that maybe it is because we are not listening to our inner voice. You know, the Voice, still and small, deep inside us all…calling. In other words, our discontent and frustration may be the products of not listening to what our heart really wants to do.

I remember heading off to college set on being a doctor. It was a dream I had for many years growing up. However, when it came to trying to realize the dream, my heart was not in it. I was struggling in classes and was becoming extremely frustrated. I really wanted to just run away from it all. It was when I stopped and asked myself why I wanted to be a doctor that I realized it was not my dream, but my grandfather’s dream. He wanted me to be a doctor.

Where is your life telling you to do? Are you listening?
